Officers responding to the 400 block of Mt. Prospect Avenue found Saeed Jan and Angel Vargas with gunshot wounds around 7:50 p.m. on Thursday, May 19, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II said in a joint release with Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara.

The men, both of Newark, were taken to University Hospital, where they died, authorities said.

Vargas' funeral services have been set for Wednesday, June 1 at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church in Newark, his obituary says.

There have been no arrests, and the investigation remains ongoing.
